Te Papa: choose it for the waterfront museum, but check the entry rule
Start with Te Papa's entry rule, and check which side of it you fall on before you plan the visit. As of August 2026, Te Papa's visit page states "Free museum entry for New Zealanders and people living in New Zealand", and separately that charges may apply to international visitors and to paid exhibitions and experiences — so general entry is free for residents, not for every visitor. As of August 2026, international visitors aged 16 and over pay NZ$35 for museum entry, international visitors under 16 are free, and New Zealanders, people living in Aotearoa New Zealand (including those on work, study or residence visas) and visitors from Niue, the Cook Islands and Tokelau are exempt.
As of August 2026, that NZ$35 ticket is valid for 48 hours, so you can return the next day at no extra cost, and it covers the permanent exhibitions and galleries, while paid exhibitions, guided tours and special experiences are ticketed separately. Te Papa does not require international visitors to book ahead, but recommends buying online to skip the queue or to book a preferred visit time. As of August 2026 it opens every day 10am-6pm except Christmas Day, at 55 Cable Street. Use the 48-hour window deliberately: take the permanent galleries on the day the weather is against you and keep the clear day for the outdoor half of your list.
Wellington Cable Car: choose it for the short climb to Kelburn
The Cable Car is a compact option that fits a busy day — a 3 to 5 minute ride departing every 10 minutes, on the 10, as of August 2026. Before anything else, check the date: the Cable Car takes an annual winter maintenance shutdown that removes the ride for about a week, and in 2026 it ran from 27 July to 3 August, with the ride back on 4 August, so a visit inside that window needs a different plan.
As of August 2026, visitor fares are NZ$7.00 adult one way and NZ$13.00 adult return, NZ$3.50 and NZ$6.50 for a child aged 5 to 15, and NZ$4.00 and NZ$7.00 concession, with infants aged 0 to 4 travelling free. At the Kelburn end are the Cable Car Museum, the Kelburn viewing platform, Cable Top Eatery, and Space Place at Carter Observatory, which the Cable Car describes as a 2-3 minute walk from the terminal. As of August 2026, the Cable Car Museum at the Kelburn terminal has free general admission and opens 10am to 5pm, seven days a week. A one-way ticket lets you ride up and walk back down through the Botanic Garden, a downhill stroll the Cable Car describes as taking around 40 minutes; Wellington Gardens describes the same trip in the other direction as a 5-minute ride from Cable Car Lane off Lambton Quay to the garden's upper entrance.
Plan the walk down around the season. As of August 2026, Wellington Botanic Garden ki Paekākā covers 25 hectares with grounds open year-round from dawn to dusk, the Picnic Café is open year-round 8.30am-4pm, and the Treehouse Visitor Centre and Shop opens Monday-Friday 9am-4pm year-round plus weekends and holidays 10am-4pm from September to April — but is closed at weekends from May to August, so a winter weekend walk-down finds the visitor centre shut. As of August 2026, the New Zealander rate is NZ$27.00 per adult, NZ$11.00 per child aged 5 to 17, NZ$23.00 concession, free for pre-schoolers, and NZ$59.00 for a family of two adults plus up to five children. Zealandia defines "New Zealanders" as anyone living in New Zealand or NZ citizens and permanent residents living overseas, and runs the distinction on an honesty system with no proof required, as of August 2026.
General Admission tickets are valid for two consecutive days and do not need to be pre-purchased — Zealandia says to simply buy at the ticket desk on Level 1 of the Visitor Centre. There are more than 32km of tracks, ranging from flat accessible walking options to rugged tramping tracks, visitors generally spend 2-3 hours in the sanctuary, and General Admission also covers an indoor exhibition with a life-size moa model. As of August 2026, the sanctuary is open 9:00am-4:30pm every day except Christmas Day, with last entry at 4:00pm and the café open 9:00am-4:00pm. As of August 2026, Zealandia runs a free day shuttle to and from the city and is also close to several regular bus routes.
There is a wet-weather fallback inside the gate as well: as of August 2026, browsing Zealandia's indoor Zealandia Exhibition, Te Māra Toi Gallery, Rātā Café and the Zealandia Store is free and needs no ticket, because only entry to the sanctuary itself is charged.
Zealandia by Night: choose it if seeing kiwi in the wild is the point
The night tour is a different commitment from daytime admission. As of August 2026, the Zealandia by Night guided tour costs from NZ$120.00 per adult and from NZ$30.00 per child aged 12 to 17, runs 2.5 hours, departs around dusk with the exact time confirmed on booking, takes 12 people per tour, and has a minimum age of 12 years. As of August 2026, Viator's "Zealandia Small Group Eco Wildlife Night Tour" listing states a duration of 2 hours 30 minutes with the admission ticket included, and free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.
Weather rarely cancels this one, which is what makes it workable on a wet evening. Zealandia says of its night tours: "We go out in just about all conditions, so be prepared! ... In extreme circumstances, we may call off a tour for safety reasons." It advises sturdy walking shoes, warm clothing and a waterproof layer, and warns you should expect to be on your feet for at least 2 hours on slopes, gravel and uneven terrain. Set expectations on the wildlife too: Zealandia states that while kiwi are seen on most night tours, sightings are not guaranteed, because the birds live wild in the valley and have large territories.
Season decides which after-hours walk you can actually book. As of August 2026, Zealandia by Night tours run each night year-round, Kids' Night Walks with a minimum age of 5 run April to September, Twilight Tours run October to March, Zealandia at Dawn walks run on select weekends April to September, and photography tours run on select weekends October to April. Private night tours for groups of up to 48 need 1-2 weeks' notice to arrange, and Zealandia says requests for a date within the next week may be declined.
Wētā Workshop: choose it for the day the weather turns
If the forecast has turned, start here. Wētā Workshop states the tour is entirely indoors and wheelchair accessible, with accessible bathrooms and a mobility parking space on Camperdown Road. As of August 2026, the Wētā Workshop Tour in Miramar lasts 90 minutes and has an online price from NZ$59, departing from the Wētā Cave at 1 Weka Street, Miramar. As of August 2026, the Guided Transfers & Tour option has an online price from NZ$105 and runs 3 hours in total: a 30-minute guided transfer from 217 Wakefield Street in the city centre, 15 minutes in the Wētā Cave, the 90-minute tour, 15 minutes for retail, and a 30-minute transfer back. As of August 2026, Viator's "Wētā Workshop Experiences Tour - Wellington" listing states a duration of 1 hour 30 minutes with the admission ticket included, and free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.
Getting there and booking ahead are the two things to plan. As of August 2026, Wētā Workshop Experiences in Miramar is open 7 days except Christmas Day, 8:45am-4:45pm, sits about a 20-minute drive from Wellington city centre, or the number 2 Miramar bus to stop 6240 on Darlington Road then a 250m walk, with on-street parking free but limited. Wētā Workshop says its tours frequently fill up, particularly during the November to April peak season, and recommends booking online in advance rather than relying on walk-in availability. Two notes if you are booking for a family: the operator welcomes children but says some images on the tour showcase horror films, and the tour includes drone footage and passages through small, dark rooms.
Space Place at Carter Observatory: choose it for a planetarium evening
Space Place sits at the Kelburn end of the Cable Car — but check the calendar twice before you build a night around it. Space Place's 2026 planned-maintenance closure ran from 27 July to 9 August, with the planetarium back on 10 August. As of August 2026, admission costs NZ$16 per adult, NZ$14 for a Gold Card holder or NZ student with NZ ID, NZ$10 per child aged 4 to 14, free for preschool children aged 0 to 3, and NZ$49 for a family of two adults and two children.
Its hours are the other reason it slips out of itineraries. As of August 2026 it is closed all day Monday, opens on Tuesday and Wednesday in the evening only, 5pm-10:30pm, then Thursday 10am-10:30pm, Friday and Saturday 10am-11pm, and Sunday 10am-5pm, with last entry 30 minutes before close and the last evening planetarium show starting at 8pm — so it is not a daytime option early in the week. Note the overlap this winter: as of August 2026 the Cable Car reopens on 4 August 2026 and Space Place on 10 August 2026, so an early-August visit needs both dates checked rather than one.
The weather question has a clear split here. Space Place states that solar telescope viewing is only possible on a clear day and that "This offering is not guaranteed... Weather-dependent", and that night telescope viewings are offered on some evenings, weather dependent, starting approximately 1 hour after sunset, while the planetarium, interactive galleries and Matariki theatre are indoors and run regardless. Space Place is at 40 Salamanca Rd, Kelburn, at the top of the Cable Car a short stroll from the terminus, and requires children under 14 to be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Te Nukuao Wellington Zoo: choose it for a morning with children
As of August 2026, Te Nukuao Wellington Zoo general entry costs NZ$28 per adult, NZ$22 concession and NZ$14 per child, and is free for under-3s. As of August 2026, family passes cost NZ$49 for one adult and two children, NZ$59 for one adult and three children, NZ$69 for two adults and two children, and NZ$79 for two adults and three children. As of August 2026, the zoo is open 9:30am-5pm all year except Christmas Day, child entry applies to 3 to 14 year olds with under-3s free, any child under 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and pushchair hire is NZ$20 for the day with NZ$10 refunded if the pushchair comes back in good condition.
Book the animal experiences before you travel rather than at the gate. Wellington Zoo's bookable Close Encounters are booked separately from general entry, and when the coming week's booking grid was checked on 2 August 2026 it showed a mix of availability and sold-out slots. Close Encounters are capacity-limited — most take up to four people, a few only two — and sell out well ahead, so book one before you build a day around it (as of August 2026).
Mātiu/Somes Island: choose it for a predator-free island walk
The East by West ferry ties your day to a fixed sailing across the harbour, and the operator publishes what happens if the weather closes in (as of August 2026). As of August 2026, return fares valid from 15 May 2026 are NZ$42 adult, NZ$24 child (5 to 16 year-olds or with valid high school ID), NZ$24 Connect Concession for community services or total mobility cardholders, and NZ$6 for SuperGold card holders, with under-5s free but still needing a booked ticket. As of August 2026, East by West states that those fares "include a $6 Mātiu/Somes visitor fee, which is passed onto DOC and the island's Kaitiaki Board, and used for the revitalisation of infrastructure and cultural assets on Mātiu/Somes."
As of August 2026, a standard East by West day trip gives 2 to 2.5 hours on the island depending on the sailing, while a longer weekend option — 1pm from Queens Wharf or 1:30pm from Days Bay — gives just over 3 hours, and passengers must return on the specified departure time on their booking confirmation. The Seal Coast Safari is the outdoor half-day whose product page states "Safari runs in all weather", alongside a warning that "Weather and other conditions may lead to route changes", with a stated duration of 3.5 hours and free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. The trip starts at Otari-Wilton's Bush — 100 hectares of ancient and regenerating forest, New Zealand's only botanic garden dedicated solely to native plants — then uses private access through Terawhiti Station to reach Wellington's south coast and a New Zealand fur seal colony at Tongue Point, with light refreshments provided.
