The market and the saleyards tour
The market sets up beneath the clocktower on the cobblestone quadrant of Manchester Square, and Feilding & District Promotion describes about 30 stallholders each week selling directly as farmers, growers and artisan producers, with seasonal produce, cut flowers and vegetable seedlings, and calls it a good place to bring children (as of August 2026). The square is the other half of the morning: Wikipedia describes Feilding as an Edwardian-themed town whose district plan encourages that style in the central business district, records that many of its commercial buildings were built in the 1900s and have been restored and preserved over time, and separately records that local businesses established the Feilding Edwardian Project in September 1993 to revitalise the central business area. Wikipedia records sixteen wins of the annual New Zealand's Most Beautiful Town award, with no year attached to any of them.
Two blocks from the town centre, the saleyards are the working article rather than a display: 330 sheep pens to walk through while the auction runs, a cattle rostrum to sit in, and twice-weekly sales that the yards' own site averages at 15,000 sheep and 1,400 head of cattle in a given week, alongside a variety of specialist sales (as of August 2026). The regional tourism organisation says those sales are held on the original saleyards used in 1880. The yards' own site calls them one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere; Wikipedia puts even that hedged version in the past tense, so the operator's own wording is the one this guide carries.
The guided tour starts at 11am each Friday, Feilding & District Promotion describes the guides as retired local farmers, and you are asked to arrive 15 minutes early under the Drover and Dog silhouette outside the stock yards on Manchester Street (as of August 2026). How long it takes depends on which body you read: the yards' own site says from 30 minutes to hours depending on your interest level; Feilding & District Promotion, which takes the booking, says at least 60 minutes and longer depending on your level of interest; and the regional tourism organisation ManawatuNZ publishes a bounded approximately one to two hours without that condition (as of August 2026). Plan on the booking body's at least 60 minutes and keep the rest of the morning loose.
Booking is the part to get right. As of August 2026 bookings must be made in advance with the Feilding & District Promotion office at 22 Manchester Square, by phone, by email or through the enquiry form its tour page links to, so this is not a turn-up-on-the-day tour. What that form takes is an enquiry rather than a booking: it says Feilding & District Promotion will be in contact to confirm, and that your booking is not confirmed until you receive its email (as of August 2026). Feilding as a Manawatū base: the rest of the week
The Coach House Museum opens seven days with the closures listed above, and the Makino Aquatic Centre's indoor complex holds three heated pools, a 25-metre six-lane pool at 27.5 degrees, a play pool with a beach area at 31 degrees and a learn-to-swim pool at 32 degrees, while its outdoor complex is seasonal and closes over winter, with no opening or closing dates published (as of August 2026). The Feilding Art Centre publishes Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm, adds in its own words that it is often open until 4pm on a Saturday and invites you to check in, publishes that it is closed on Sundays, and publishes that public holiday hours may vary (as of August 2026). As of August 2026 its own site publishes that exhibitions change every month and publishes no admission price, so ask at the door.
A Senior Mornings ticket is NZ$17.00 and includes complimentary morning tea, which the cinema publishes as available on most Monday and Tuesday mornings, on selected films, with ticket purchase; a Bring Baby Too ticket is NZ$17.00 an adult with children aged 3 and under free with a parent or caregiver, and its complimentary morning tea is published for Wednesday morning with ticket purchase (as of August 2026). As of August 2026 neither line publishes a day on which the session itself screens, and the cinema keeps its own listing of current Senior Morning and Bring Baby Too sessions, so that is the thing to open when you want a date.
At the weekend the steam rail museum opens on Saturday and the Lions Club mini golf opens if the weather allows, both on the terms in the table above (as of August 2026). Where the mini golf is depends on who publishes it: Feilding & District Promotion's community directory and the ManawatuNZ listing that cites it both give Makino Park, Church Street, while Manawatū District Council's Feilding Playgrounds page publishes the same facility as Feilding Lions Mini Golf on Aorangi Street (as of August 2026). The Feilding and District Steam Rail Society also runs mainline excursions, but they are occasional rather than scheduled: it publishes each one on events.steamrail.org.nz when bookings open and keeps a notification list, so an excursion is something to catch rather than to plan a trip around (as of August 2026).
As a base, Feilding puts the district within easy reach. Kowhai Park, 10.2 hectares on South Street, holds the Mason Family Rose Garden's 150 rose bushes, a camellia walk opened in September 1991, two playgrounds and the Old Tote building of 1916. Can you get to Feilding without a car?
Yes. Connect's route 302 Feilding Connector runs between Palmerston North and Manchester Square, the route 301 Orbiter circulates inside the town, and fares are zone-based rather than flat, so check the operator's fare table for your journey (as of August 2026). As of August 2026 the North Island Main Trunk line runs through Feilding, but the town has had no regular passenger train service since 2012, and Feilding Aerodrome is an active light-aircraft airfield rather than somewhere to fly into.
