Attraction
Hobbiton Movie Set is the permanently built film set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, set in rolling farmland just outside Matamata. Guided walking tours lead you between the 44 hobbit holes, past the Mill and the double-arched bridge, and finish with a drink at the Green Dragon Inn. Tours run daily and sell out well ahead in summer, so booking a timed slot in advance is the practical move.
Hobbiton sits about 10 kilometres west of Matamata on Buckland Road, roughly a 15 minute drive from town. Most visitors arrive by car: it is around 45 minutes from Rotorua, 1 hour from Hamilton, and 2 to 2.5 hours from Auckland via State Highway 27, with free parking at the Shire's Rest visitor centre. If you are not driving, the set runs its own shuttle from the Matamata i-SITE in the town centre, timed to tour departures, and several operators sell day tours from Auckland and Rotorua that bundle transport with entry. All tours of the set itself are guided; you cannot walk the grounds independently.
