Attraction
Kawarau Suspension Bridge crosses the Kawarau River gorge on State Highway 6 near Gibbston Valley, and is the site of the world's first commercial bungy jump, run by AJ Hackett Bungy from a 43-metre platform on the bridge. Visitors can watch jumpers from a viewing deck for free or book a jump; the historic bridge predates the bungy operation and also carries walkers across the gorge.
The Kawarau Bungy Centre and suspension bridge are on State Highway 6 in Gibbston Valley, about 23km and a 25-minute drive northeast of central Queenstown toward Cromwell. On-site parking is free for visitors and jumpers. AJ Hackett Bungy runs a shuttle bus from central Queenstown for jump bookings, and several Queenstown day-tour operators include a stop at the bridge on wine-trail or gorge itineraries. Independent drivers can visit the free viewing deck at any time; watching jumpers does not require a booking, only jumping does.
