Attraction
Central Otago is New Zealand's inland wine region, known for Pinot Noir and dry, continental summers, with over 100 vineyards spread across sub-regions including Gibbston, Cromwell, Bannockburn and Alexandra. Many wineries near Queenstown offer cellar-door tastings, and the wider region also covers stone-fruit orchards and old goldfield towns. A visit typically means a self-drive or guided day trip rather than a single site.
Gibbston Valley, the closest wine sub-region, is about 25 minutes' drive from Queenstown along State Highway 6. Cromwell is roughly 60 kilometres and 50 minutes away, with Bannockburn and Alexandra a further short drive beyond it. The region is reachable by self-drive rental car, or through wine-tour operators running half-day and full-day trips from Queenstown that include tastings and cellar-door stops without the need to drive.
