Attraction
Waitangi is the site of the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands, where the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed in 1840. The grounds include the Treaty House, Te Whare Rūnanga meeting house, the ceremonial waka Ngātokimatawhaorua, and two museums, with a guided tour and cultural performance included in standard admission. A visit typically takes three to five hours.
Waitangi Treaty Grounds are about 2km from central Paihia, a walk of roughly 25-30 minutes along the waterfront or a few minutes by car. Tour shuttles and taxis connect Paihia with the grounds, and the entrance has an on-site car park for independent visitors. The site sits across the bridge from Waitangi township, close to Haruru Falls and the Paihia waterfront.
