Marlborough District
Marlborough is a wine-producing district at the northeastern tip of the South Island, centred on the town of Blenheim, and is New Zealand's largest grape-growing region with around 150 wineries. Visitors tour cellar doors across the Wairau Valley, Awatere Valley and Southern Valleys sub-regions by car, bike or organised tour, tasting Sauvignon Blanc and other wines produced since the first commercial vineyards were planted in 1973.
How to get there
Blenheim, the district's main town, sits close to Picton, the South Island terminus for the Interislander and Bluebridge ferries from Wellington, with most wineries concentrated in the Wairau Valley just west and south of town. Marlborough Airport at Blenheim has domestic flights, and State Highway 1 connects the district to Picton, Nelson and Christchurch. Cellar doors are spread across the valley and are best reached by car, hired bike, or a guided wine tour departing from Blenheim.
