Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway
The Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway is an 11.7-kilometre DOC-managed loop track around the headland at the edge of Kaikōura township, passing limestone cliffs, seabird colonies and a fur seal colony near Point Kean. Allow about three hours for the full loop. The track is free, open year-round and needs no booking.
How to get there
The walkway has two main trailheads at the edge of Kaikōura township. The Point Kean car park is reached via the Esplanade, Avoca Street and Fyffe Quay, about 4.5km from the i-SITE, and sits beside the seal colony. The South Bay car park is signposted off SH1 about 1.8km south of town, then a further 2km to the parking area. Both car parks have toilets. There is no public transport to the trailheads; visitors walk or drive from town, and independent access is straightforward with no permits needed.
