Transitional Cathedral (Cardboard Cathedral)
The Transitional Cathedral, known locally as the Cardboard Cathedral, is a working Anglican cathedral built from cardboard tubes, timber, steel and polycarbonate after the 2011 earthquake destroyed the original ChristChurch Cathedral. It sits on Latimer Square and hosts regular services alongside daily visitor access. Entry is free, and short guided tours run most days with a suggested donation.
How to get there
The cathedral stands in Latimer Square in central Christchurch, an easy walk from Cathedral Square and the central city hotels and hostels. Metro buses stop nearby along Madras and Gloucester Streets, and the site is on the central city tram loop route. On-street parking and nearby paid car parks serve visitors arriving by car. Because it is in the compact central city grid, no shuttle or tour transfer is needed for independent visits.
