Attraction
Sumner Beach is a sand beach in the seaside suburb of Sumner, about 13 kilometres from central Christchurch. It is used for swimming, surfing and walking, with Cave Rock marking its western end and cafes and shops lining the Esplanade behind it. Access is free and unguided, and conditions vary with tide and swell, so checking surf reports before swimming is worthwhile.
Sumner sits on Christchurch's eastern coast, about 13 kilometres and around a 20-minute drive from the city centre via Ferry Road and Main Road. The number 3 Metro bus connects central Christchurch to Sumner, and a coastal cycle path also links the two. Free parking runs along the Esplanade and side streets, though spaces fill on sunny weekends, so arriving early is advised. Taxis and rideshare services cover the route too. No tour or shuttle booking is needed for an independent visit.
