New Regent Street
New Regent Street is a pedestrianised shopping precinct in central Christchurch, built in 1932 with rows of pastel-coloured Spanish Mission-style buildings that hold Category 1 heritage listing. The street is lined with independent boutiques, cafes and eateries, and the Christchurch Tramway runs along it, having returned after the street reopened from 2011 earthquake repairs in 2013. A stroll along the strip typically takes 20 to 30 minutes without stops.
How to get there
New Regent Street runs between Armagh and Gloucester Streets in central Christchurch, a short walk from Cathedral Square and well within the central city grid. The Christchurch Tramway stops directly on the street, making it accessible by tram as well as on foot from nearby hotels and car parks. Public buses serve the surrounding central-city streets, and several parking buildings sit within a few minutes' walk. No advance booking is needed to visit, since it is an open pedestrian street.
