Attraction
The Church of the Good Shepherd is a small stone church on the shore of Lake Tekapo, built in 1935 as a memorial to the region's early runholders. The exterior and lakeside grounds are open to the public at all times, while interior access depends on a volunteer guide being on duty, typically for a few hours between Wednesday and Sunday.
The church sits directly on the Lake Tekapo lakefront, a short walk from the township's main street, shops and car parks. Tekapo is on State Highway 8, roughly midway between Christchurch and Queenstown, and is a common stop on self-drive and coach itineraries through the Mackenzie Country. Sunday worship runs from 4pm to 5.15pm, and interior opening depends on volunteer availability, so visitors wanting to see inside should check current times before travelling. No shuttle is needed given the church's central lakefront location.
