Bridge of Remembrance
The Bridge of Remembrance is a Neoclassical war memorial spanning the Avon River on Cashel Street in central Christchurch, opened on Armistice Day in 1924 to commemorate servicemen and women of the World Wars and later conflicts. Its stone arch carries the Latin inscription "Quid non pro patria" beneath carved wreaths. The bridge was repaired after the 2011 earthquake and rededicated on Anzac Day 2016.
How to get there
The bridge crosses the Avon River on Cashel Street in the central city, close to Cathedral Square and the main retail precinct, so it is reached on foot from almost anywhere downtown. It sits on the central bus network's core routes and within walking distance of central-city parking buildings. No tour or ticket is needed, since it is an open pedestrian bridge viewable at any time, and it is often combined with a walk along the Avon River or through nearby Cathedral Square.
