Whakarewarewa Forest (The Redwoods)
Whakarewarewa Forest, known as the Redwoods, is a plantation forest on Rotorua's edge planted with Californian redwoods from the 1890s alongside native and exotic species. Free walking and mountain-biking tracks run from the visitor centre through the redwood grove, and the separately ticketed Redwoods Treewalk crosses 28 suspension bridges between mature trees; bookings for the Treewalk are recommended in peak season.
How to get there
Whakarewarewa Forest is a few minutes' drive southeast of central Rotorua on Long Mile Road, with the Redwoods Visitor Centre serving as the main entrance and car park. On-site parking is available, and several Rotorua tour operators run shuttle transfers or include the forest on half-day itineraries. Walking and biking tracks are open daily without a booking; the Treewalk and mountain-bike shuttle services require separate tickets. Independent visitors without a car can reach the forest by taxi, rideshare or local bus from town in roughly ten minutes.
