Sulphur Point
Sulphur Point is a geothermal lakeshore area within the Sulphur Bay Wildlife Refuge, reached by a boardwalk that begins near the Bath House in Government Gardens. Steam vents, mineral-stained ground and boiling mud pools sit alongside habitat for black swans, mallards and threatened native birds such as the dabchick. Visitors are asked to stay on the marked path to avoid disturbing nesting birds.
How to get there
Sulphur Point is within walking distance of central Rotorua, at the edge of Government Gardens on the Lake Rotorua shoreline. Free parking is available at Government Gardens and along the lakefront, and the boardwalk trail continues from there to Motutara Point. The full lakeshore walk takes around two hours return; a shorter loop from the gardens is possible for those with less time. No shuttle is needed, as the site is accessible on foot from Rotorua's town centre.
