Mt. Tarawera
Mt Tarawera is a dormant volcano southeast of Rotorua whose 1886 eruption reshaped the surrounding landscape. The mountain is sacred to local iwi and its summit access road is gated, so visits run only through authorised guided tours, typically a half-day trip with a walk around the crater rim. Independent hiking to the summit is not possible.
How to get there
Mt Tarawera sits roughly 24km southeast of Rotorua, but the access road to the crater is locked and only authorised tour operators hold the concession to drive it, so self-guided visits are not possible. Guided half-day tours include return transport from Rotorua accommodation or the i-SITE, with the drive to the trailhead taking about an hour, partly along an unsealed 4WD track, followed by roughly two hours of guided walking around the volcanic crater rim.
