Lake Rotoiti
Lake Rotoiti is a 13-kilometre-long lake east of Rotorua, connected to Lake Rotorua by the Ohau Channel. Known as a trout fishery, it is used for boating, kayaking and jet boat trips, with Okere Falls at its outlet a base for whitewater rafting. Boat fishing season opens on 1 October each year.
How to get there
Lake Rotoiti is about a 30-minute drive from central Rotorua, reached via State Highway 33 towards Okere Falls and Tauranga. The lake has several boat ramps and lakeside access points, and visitors without their own boat can join jet boat trips, kayak or canoe tours, or scheduled water shuttles that depart from Rotorua-based operators. Okere Falls, at the lake's outlet, is reached by continuing on SH33 past Trout Pool Road. There is no scheduled public transport directly to the lake, so most visitors arrive by car or booked tour transfer.
