Hell's Gate Geothermal Park
Hell's Gate is a geothermal reserve near Rotorua with a walkway past boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles, sulphur deposits and a hot waterfall. Visits combine a self-guided or guided walk with an on-site mud bath and sulphur spa. The park operates on Maori-owned land at Tikitere, with tickets covering the walkway alone or walkway plus spa packages sold in advance or at the gate.
How to get there
Hell's Gate is at Tikitere on State Highway 30, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive northeast of central Rotorua toward Whakatane. The park has its own car park at the entrance, so visitors with a rental car can drive there directly without a tour. Shuttle transfers and organised tours from Rotorua hotels are also bookable through the park or local operators, useful for visitors without a car. Public bus links from central Rotorua are limited, so a car, shuttle or tour is the practical option.
