Hauraki Gulf Islands
The Hauraki Gulf Islands are a group of islands off Auckland's coast, including the volcanic cone of Rangitoto, the vineyards and beaches of Waiheke, and several smaller conservation and marine park islands. Each island is reached by passenger ferry from the Auckland CBD waterfront, with journey times and services varying by destination. Waiheke and Rangitoto are the most visited, suited to day trips or overnight stays.
How to get there
Ferries depart from the downtown Auckland Ferry Building, a short walk from Britomart railway station and the city bus exchange. Waiheke Island is about 35 to 40 minutes away with the main operator, with some sailings also calling at Devonport or Half Moon Bay. Rangitoto Island is closer, around 25 minutes from downtown, and some services stop at Devonport en route. No vehicle bridge connects any of the islands to the mainland, so a ferry ticket is required; once on Waiheke, hop-on hop-off buses cover the main sights without a car.
